Though Suryakumar Yadav led India to victory in the T20 World Cup 2026, he is expected to be removed from the T20I captaincy. Sources from BCCI have informed NDTV that the selection committee, under Ajit Agarkar, is considering Shreyas Iyer as the next T20I captain for India, having been impressed with his leadership of Punjab Kings (PBKS) in IPL 2026. The BCCI also aims to bring in younger players for India’s T20I team as they prepare for a tour of Ireland and England following the IPL. Previously, a report from the Times of India mentioned that the BCCI selection committee, headed by Ajit Agarkar, has “run out of patience” with Suryakumar’s recent struggles with his batting. Shreyas is a strong candidate for the captain role unless there’s a sudden change in plans. Additionally, there is uncertainty about whether Suryakumar will make the team as a batsman due to his recent struggles.
Even with India's strong performance in T20Is, Suryakumar Yadav has had difficulty scoring runs in the past few months, and things have worsened due to his IPL 2026 season, where he only scored 195 runs in 10 matches for Mumbai Indians (MI). The report also mentioned that reliable sources from the BCCI and Team India stated that Suryakumar has been dealing with a wrist problem for some time, continuing to play despite experiencing pain. Meanwhile, Shreyas Iyer guided Punjab Kings (PBKS) to six victories out of their first seven matches and scored 333 runs in nine innings. It’s noteworthy that Suryakumar has yet to lose a single T20I series since stepping in as captain after Rohit Sharma retired. Conversely, Shreyas has not participated in a T20I for over two years, with his last match in December 2023.
