Many people usually switch off the air vents in planes when the air feels too dry. However, health experts suggest that we should keep those vents on, as they are important for good air quality and passenger comfort. “When you're on a plane, these vents help bring fresh air into the cabin, which provides proper airflow and helps remove dangerous particles like dust, germs, and viruses. This airflow not only improves air quality but also minimizes the chances of spreading airborne illnesses among travelers,” explained Dr Narander Singla, a leading doctor in internal medicine at CK Birla Hospital in Delhi. When the air vent is pointed towards your upper body or lap, it helps push away any airborne particles that may be nearby. “While it won’t fully protect you from getting sick, it does reduce the chances of inhaling unwanted bacteria while being in close quarters with many people,” Dr Manas Mengar, a lung doctor at KIMS Hospitals in Thane, noted.

Furthermore, the airflow helps manage both temperature and humidity, making the flight experience more pleasant. Dr Singla stated that modern aircraft come with High Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) filters that can trap 99.97 percent of particles as tiny as 0.3 microns, which include dust, pollen, and bacteria. “The air in the cabin is changed every two to three minutes, which helps keep the environment healthy. Therefore, keeping the vent on during your flight can ensure cleaner air, reduce the risk of getting sick, and improve your overall comfort,” added Dr Singla. Since cabin air is often dry, turning off the vent doesn't make much difference. Some people might feel their nose, lips, or skin getting dry, but this can be solved by drinking enough water, using lip balm, or applying moisturizer. This way, you can benefit from the airflow without feeling uncomfortable, Dr Mengar suggested. He also recommended setting the airflow to medium and tilting it slightly forward, instead of pointing it directly at the face, to prevent irritation. “This helps create a shield while keeping you comfortable,” Dr Mengar advised.

While many find it more pleasant to turn the vent off when feeling dry, doing so takes away a source of protection during flights. “By keeping the vent on, you not only receive cleaner air but also help disperse germs, making your health safer during long flights,” Dr Mengar noted.
