In January 2026, Germany shared that Indian citizens no longer need a Schengen Airport Transit Visa (Type A) when passing through its international airports. This announcement was made during the first official trip of German Chancellor Friedrich Merz to India on January 12 and 13, 2026. The exemption is for travelers connecting through major German airports like Frankfurt and Munich when heading to a country outside the Schengen area. As of today, June 3, 2026, the requirement for the airport transit visa has been officially removed. An official statement from the German Embassy in New Delhi on June 2, 2026, mentioned, "Indian citizens will not need a transit visa while going to another nation with a stop at a German airport. " The announcement about the removal of this airport transit visa for Indian travelers was published in the Federal Law Gazette on June 2, 2026, and is effective from June 3, 2026. The statement continued, "This decision stems from Chancellor Friedrich Merz's visit to India in January of this year. It emphasizes the Federal Government's dedication to strengthening German-Indian connections, easing the movement of people, and boosting economic ties. "

In response to this news, Randhir Jaiswal, the spokesperson for the Ministry of External Affairs, posted on X, "We appreciate Germany putting into action the announcement about removing the transit visa for Indian citizens traveling through Germany, only by air, starting June 03, 2026. " He also mentioned, "This announcement followed talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chancellor Merz during Merz's visit to India in January 2026. " He further pointed out that this change is likely to improve personal connections between India and Germany. With the new regulations, Indian passport holders can now transit through German airports without a Schengen Airport Transit Visa, as long as they follow certain rules. Travelers must stay in the international transit area, cannot leave the airport, and need to continue to a non-Schengen country within 24 hours. It's crucial to understand that this relaxation does not allow entry into Germany or any other Schengen country. Passengers wishing to exit the airport will still need to apply for the appropriate visa.

As stated on the official site of Germany Visa, "When your stopover includes more than one Schengen nation, the 'transit privilege' is not applicable, and you will have to obtain a Schengen tourist visa. This is due to the fact that leaving the transit zone in one Schengen nation counts as entering the Schengen Area, even if it is only for a short time. " For travelers who are just switching planes to reach a non-Schengen country, this change makes travel arrangements much easier. The elimination of the transit visa requirement removes an important step in the process, simplifying the planning of trips. Indian travelers can now access more flight options through Germany without the hassle of needing documents at the last minute. For students, workers, and families on long journeys, this means less paperwork, reduced expenses, and a much smoother travel experience overall.
